Stand up for Port Pirie Workers
In government, State Labor helped secure the future of Nyrstar in Port Pirie.
Working with the workers, the community and the company, Labor secured an agreement to support the construction of a state-of-the-art metal processing plant.
By standing up for local workers Labor saved more than 700 direct jobs at the smelter and many more across Port Pirie, with the city facing a dire future if the plant closed.
Thanks to the hard work of the people of Port Pirie, the new plant is up and running, it’s profitable and has a strong, long-term future.
Regrettably, Liberal State Treasurer Rob Lucas has been using highly inflammatory language and even threatened legal action against the smelter’s owner Nyrstar.
This does nothing to help the workers at the smelter, nor the wider Port Pirie community.
Labor will always stand up for Nyrstar workers.
We will always stand up for Port Pirie.
