The Malinauskas State Government is examining banning children under the age of 14 from having social media accounts. The nation leading reform would also require parental consent for children aged 14 to 15 to have a social media account.

To get this done, Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French has been appointed by the government to conduct a thorough review, looking at the legal, regulatory and technological pathways to impose a ban.

We are seeing mounting evidence from experts of the adverse impact of social media on children, their mental health and development.

This builds on SA's leadership making changes to protect children's safety, after banning mobile phones in public high schools from Term 3 2023- violent incidents are down 29% compared to the same period in the previous year.
